This project by ProtoÉditions and researcher & artist Vera van der Burg explores the potential for AI to assist in the creative design process, specifically in exploring shapes on the edge of nature and technology. The team used a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to generate new shapes based on a dataset of images of mushrooms and technological devices, and transformed them into 3D shapes. The GAN functioned as a tool for exploring a specific style or aesthetic inspired by both nature and technology and provided inspiration for the designer to work with, offering a new perspective and insight. The project showcases the emergence of new interactions between a designer and an AI and aims to identify what choices or influences each actor makes or has during such a process.
